Egypt is still experiencing a period of change and this has effected the value of the Egyptian Pound. Because of this it is advisable to take a small quantity of US Dollars with you when visiting the country as some establishments (especially at tourist attractions and for tours) will only accept payment in Dollars.
There is also a shortage of small change and small denomination notes so when ordering currency it is worth specifying small value notes for most of your currency. You may be charged a small surcharge for requesting a specific breakdown but it will save you money in the long run as if the Egyptian shop or restaurant cannot change your note, they may simply not give you change! Try and get as much of your travel money in £1 EGP, £5 EGP, £10 EGP and £20 EGP as you can, and avoid £100 EGP or larger notes.
If you are taking a credit or debit card to Egypt, consider a prepaid currency card instead as they offer lower fees and are accepted everywhere.
Because of the recent past we strongly recomment that you monitor the travel advice published by the FCO.
