Travel Alerts

The FCO issue regularly updated travel alerts to try and keep travelers safe. We monitor all alerts for Malaysia and update this page as soon as the advice changes.

  • There have been recent (Nov 15th) attacks on tourists.
  • The FCO advise against all but essential travel to the islands off the coast of eastern Sabah from Kudat to Tawau.
  • You should take care on the eastern coast of Sabah, areas east of Lahad Datu and around Semporna.

Malaysian Ringgit Currency Guide

The Malaysian Ringgit is widely stocked and offered by many UK currency suppliers, but there is little variation in the exchange rates offered despite the Ringgit being a floating currency.

…a very cheap holiday destination…

Our statistics (1st August to 31st October 2013) show that the average British tourist takes about £930 worth of Ringgits to Malaysia with them when they travel. Malaysia is recognised as a very cheap holiday destination, but UK travellers tend to stay for longer periods of time than they would at European destinations which warrant more spending money. A typical three course meal for two in Malaysia will typically cost less than £10, and a bottle of Coke just 40p. partners with the FCO to promote their ‘Know Before You Go External link opens in a new window‘ travel information campaign. We strongly suggest that you visit the FCO pages if you are planning on visiting Malaysia. The current FCO advice regarding money in Malaysia says “Credit card and ATM fraud is widespread. Take great care when using your card.” for that reason we strongly recommend taking your travel money as cash.
