There are two currencies call the Leu: the Moldova Leu and the Romanian Leu. These are not the same currency and you cannot spend Moldavian Leu in Romania. Romania joined the EU in 2007 and are due to join the Euro in 2015. This is dependent on the state of the Eurozone at that time, and may be delayed further. Because of this; if you have any leftover Leu after your holiday you should consider using a currency buy back service to convert them back into Pounds as soon as possible.
On bank notes you will see both Leu and Lei used. Lei is the plural of Leu, so you will notice 1 Leu and 5 Lei printed on them respectively.
