Travel Insurance to Turkey

Every year over 3 million Brits travel to Turkey to experience its rich charm and history; from the hustle and bustle of Ankara and Istanbul to the thousands of miles of beautiful coastline and relaxing sandy beaches, there truly is something for everyone.

Favourable exchange rates have led to a boom in tourism in recent years; the Turkish lira is the third most popular foreign currency bought in the UK after the euro and US dollar, and one pound will buy you more lira now than at any other time since new lira were introduced in 2005.

The Turks are a friendly nation and have always welcomed visitors, but good travel insurance is still essential if you're planning to visit Turkey on holiday.

Do I need travel insurance for Turkey?

Travelling to Turkey without adequate travel insurance is risky and could leave you massively out of pocket if something goes wrong while you're away. Apart from covering medical expenses, travel insurance is designed to protect you financially from a range of claims that might occur before or during your holiday. For example, reimbursing the cost of your plane tickets if you're unable to fly or have to return home, paying for accommodation if you have to move hotels or reimbursing you for any pre-booked excursions if you have to cancel or cut your holiday short.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Turkey and some hospitals expect to be paid in cash.

Is Turkey classed as Europe or worldwide for travel insurance?

There simple answer is it depends on the policy. Some insurers include Turkey in their European cover, while others list it under their worldwide cover. There is no way of knowing this information beforehand unless you trawl through the Policy Wording on the insurers website, but fortunately our comparisons take care of this for you so just need to enter Turkey as your destination and we'll only show you relevant policies that will provide you with full cover.

What kind of travel insurance do I need for Turkey?

If you're travelling to Turkey for a single one-off holiday this year, a single trip policy will be perfectly fine and will provide you with full cover between the start and end dates you specify. If you're planning on visiting Turkey more than once in the next year, or if you're planning on visiting multiple different countries, an annual / multi-trip policy may provide you with better value for money. An annual policy will cover begins on the day you purchase the policy and will cover you for multiple trips to multiple destinations for a whole year.

Is Turkey safe for tourists?

Turkey has had a tumultuous past with neighbouring Syria, and the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) currently advise against all but essential travel to areas within 10 km of the Syrian border. Despite these localised restrictions, the FCO state that travel to the vast majority of Turkey is safe for tourists and holidaymakers and there is little cause for concern.

Before you travel you should check the latest information on travelling to Turkey on the FCO's Turkey travel advice page.
