Norwegian Krone Currency Guide

If you want to head to Oslo and check out the settings for Martin Scorsese’s film adaptation of Jo Nesbo’s ‘The Snowman’ (due in 2014) then this year is the time to do it. Jo’s detective, Harry Hole, is set to be a massive box office hit and with seven books already written there are plenty more stories where The Snowman came from. If you have not read any of the Harry Hole stories think of an alcoholic Dirty Harry and you will not be far from the mark.

Norway is an expensive place…

Our statistics show that UK travellers typically take just over £660 worth of currency when visiting Norway, which is slightly above average for most European destinations. This is up from £600 last year. This is based upon orders placed between 1st of August and 31st October 2013. Norway is an expensive place for British tourists to visit: an average coffee will cost about £3.50, and a small beer can cost £7 (£6.78 on average²) in some tourist places.

You should be careful about being dependent on a credit card in Norway as they are not widely accepted at supermarkets or petrol stations, additionally bank opening times are a lot more restrictive than in the UK especially during the summer¹.

The Norwegian Krone is accepted in Norway and in border regions of Sweden, Finland in the Ferry ports in Denmark. It is common for Norwegians to shop ‘over the border’ where prices are cheaper. Norwegians refer to ATM machines as ‘mini banks’; they are common all over Norway and accept all common debit, credit and prepaid currency cards.
