Pakistani Rupee Currency Guide

The Pakistani Rupee is the official currency of Pakistan¹ and the unofficial currency of Afghanistan². These two countries are now closely associated, and there are multiple Foreign Office Travel Warnings External link opens in a new window in place for visitors to either. We recommend that you take all travel advice seriously, and if you do have to travel be sure to take comprehensive travel insurance and keep the British High Commission informed of your whereabouts at all times.

High street banks require advance notice…

The current security situation in Pakistan and the strict anti-money laundering rules mean that not many companies are willing to deal with the Pakistani Rupee. This severely limits competition. Currently the only places selling Pakistani Rupees are the high street banks and the Currency Club. High street banks will require advaance notice to order in your currency.

If you take a credit or debit card to Pakistan you will be at risk of fraud, so we recommend taking a multi-currency prepaid card instead as this will give you a degree of separation from your bank account. You should not expect to find ATM machines outside of Pakistan’s cities.
