The South African Rand is used by South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, and unofficially in Swaziland and Zimbabwe. There have been some sudden and violent changes in the ZAR exchange rate over the last few years so it is worth comparing the latest rates on a regular basis to spot the best time to buy.
If you are buying the South African Rand you should be aware of two things: firstly there are so many counterfeit 200 ZAR notes in circulation that they have been withdrawn by the South African Reserve Bank so you really do not want to accept a 200 ZAR note under any circumstances. Secondly, new bank notes came into circulation in 2012 featuring portraits of Nelson Mandela. If you have old Rand notes featuring the previous design you should exchange them as soon as possible before they cease to be legal tender. At the moment there is no set date for the withdrawal of these old notes but you should be able to find a buyer with our currency buyback comparisons if you have any of these in your possession.
Our statistics show that the average UK traveller takes £875 (based upon orders placed between 1st of August and 31st of October 2013) in South African Rand with them when they travel, which makes it one of the more higher-than-average orders we see.
