How we display buy back rates
You might notice the South African rand rates shown here are different to the South African rand rates offered by currency suppliers on our comparison pages. The rates are actually the same but are just presented in different ways. When we talk about the ZAR / GBP exchange rate, we show the ZAR rate relative to the pound so a rate of 0.04838 literally means 1 ZAR = 0.04838 GBP.
However, UK currency suppliers choose to show this rate in terms of the amount of South African rand you would need to exchange to receive 1 GBP, so (1 /) 0.04838 becomes 20.67. Or put another way, 20.67 ZAR = 1 GBP. The two rates are interchangeable but currency suppliers prefer to show the second rate which they call the buy back rate.
