Ordered a currency card

Absolute Joke. Ordered card for collection in 24 hours, downloaded the app, and it won't load my balance. Called support to be told it takes 24 hours to consolidate, despite all the marketing and literature. a number of calls later they finally admitted that this was a lie and there was an error. Told I had to wait 48 hours for IT to look into it. Not acceptable as needed to access the money whilst abroad, that's the point of the card. Refused to refund with further lies that they couldn't see the balance to be able to refund, despite having confirmed the amount they could see earlier in the call. Promised they would monitor and contact me that evening and then the next morning if not resolved, another lie, no call ever received.

They only raised with IT 10 hours after knowing about the issue, so 48 hours became 58 hours.

Sainsbury's seem quite quite happy to leave customers / families stranded abroad without access to money. Foreign call centre that just reads from a script and doesn't care about customers. 24 hour help is just a pure lie, get your money back at anytime, another lie.

Whilst waiting for a call back received an email saying they are closing my complaint as they consider it resolved - complaint hadn't even been raised and how can they consider it resolved even when they hadn't yet sorted out the issues. Playing the complaints system - now complaining to the ombudsman.

This company should be banned from working in the financial sector. Avoid at all costs.

Bought £230 worth of Euros

Bought some Euros in Sainsbury’s then realised when I got home that the rate is much lower if you don’t pre-order online. Surely they should highlight this in store? Anyway, lesson learned.

Bought £5 worth of Euros

I purchased euros from Sainsbury's travel money counter. After later checking my bank I found that a deduction had been made from another card on my account. On querying with my bank it seems that Sainsbury's claimed a cash withdrawal fee as I hadn't used a Sainsbury's bank card to purchase the euros. I hadn't been told that this could happen, nor were there any notifications anywhere. I am appalled that they have taken money from my account with no notification or authorisation. On complaining to Sainsbury's travel money I was told they will note my complaint, but it is usual policy.

Bought Euros

Had a an equivalent of £577 in euros remaining on my Sainsbury’s travel card. In store they wanted to give me £489 cash.

Do not fall for this! I went to the cash point and withdrawn £570.

Ordered a currency card

Loaded card in store with 250 euro. Installed app on phone but didn't work/wouldn't load. Called the support line who confirmed they had receipt of the transaction but that it was still being processed. Asked for a timeline as we are travelling today. Call operative said it was being escalated but no reply back and still no money on the card. Avoid.

Bought £600 worth of Euros

Feel very angry about their service... Went to get some euros in hessle as online showed 1,15 rate. They sold me for 1,10 with nectar card! Its a joke! Robbery!I will never go to this supermarket again and ensure my close family dont use them. Hope Karma will get them!

Bought travel money

Being Nectar card holder found Sainsbury Bank exchange rate very attractive, but after doing the transaction your card is showing card fee charge. When adding exchange rate and cash fee the rate is very bad. Talking to there helpdesk they pointing to T&C or apply for Sainsbury debit card. Please don't fall in this trap. One can get much better rate then shown on SB site. Paying cash you get lower rate and paying by card fee is charged. So please don't buy foreign currency from SB. Shop outside and you can get better rate and less hassle. The Sainsbury bank site I find it not going clarity so please avoid.

Bought travel money

I ordered foreign currency 16/4/25 but was only told on day of collection today, 24/4/25 that the Peru currency was unavailable- yet the money had been taken from my bank account. I was told it would be refunded in 5-7 days. Surely it is not right to take money when you do not have the goods it’s paying for?

I confirmed opening hours of bureau with employee who phoned so went to collect my dollars only to find it closed for her ‘break’, and a notice to say it would reopen in 40minutes. As I was collecting my grand daughter I could not wait and had to return later which took over an hour travelling time. She was very unsympathetic initially as she insisted she had to have her break which I understood, but could she not have explained this when I asked about times to collect?

Altogether a thoroughly bad experience and one I won’t be repeating.

Ordered a currency card

I did a transaction on Saturday 12 th April amounting to 40 euro .61 and on checking my transactions later in day discovered another 4 have been taken from my account , I was on the phone to card services , and after 45 mins and not understanding or hearing the conversation well , was to expect a call back from a supervisor , and now being Monday still no call or the pending transactions being refunded , absolutely ridiculous , meanwhile I’m still out off pocket by 166,64

Bought £300 worth of US dollars

Ordered to arrive on the Tuesday before holiday, husband waited in two days and they blamed Royal Mail. No currency for holiday ended up getting my CXD and USD at airport and now waiting on refund that takes up to 18 days

Bought £232 worth of Turkish lira

I wanted low denomination Turkish Lira notes (100tl) which Walthamstow Low Hall did not stock. They advised would order them for collection in 5 days time. Duly went to counter today & they had failed to obtain the 100 TL notes I had ordered. They had my phone number but hadn’t bothered to call to advise me. Plus the exchange rate even when using Nectar card is worse the either Post Office or Marks & Spencer. Too late for me to go elsewhere. Will avoid in future

Ordered a currency card

Terrible website that keeps logging you out. Card wouldn't work on holiday. Tried to contact for support and didn't get any help. Absolutely terrible customer service. My advice is DO NOT USE!

Bought £1,500 worth of Euros

Absolutely terrible experience with Sainsburys. We exchanged our GBP to euros for our holiday, at what admittedly was already a pretty poor rate compared to other companies and exchanges, nevertheless, we had the money out into our sainsburys travel card which meant the convenience of having it cashless when abroad. When we returned from the holiday, we decided to exchange the money back to pounds which was not only a complete faff, but also an absolute rip off. We were told the €116 would work out to be £96. Knowing it wasn't as favourable as others, we still opted for it to avoid the hassle of withdrawing and exchanging elsewhere as we were already there anyways. Low and behold, we only received £84 and was told that this was because it was Mastercard who now set the exchange rate and that was all we would get. To make matters worse, we were told they could also not withdraw the € in cash as they did not offer this. Basically, we were now tied in to their rates without much choice. Wouldn't recommend and would not be using again

Ordered a currency card

Just picked up card (as a spare for any tap in tap out travel when travelling with a teenager). Clunky online registration. App doesn’t work at all (card not supported, it says). Hope the card will! Not impressed so far and will be returning it after our trip, no doubt taking the hit on the exchange rate. Never again.

No star option not available. Terrible waste time and money. Would never use this again! And the buy back rate if you have funds left makes it a very poor choice. Lesson learnt albeit a little late.
