Compare before you buy

Some of the best travel money deals are only available when you buy online. By using a comparison site, you're more likely to see the full range of deals on offer and get the best rate.

Order online

Always place your order online, even if you plan to collect your currency in person. Most supermarkets and high street currency suppliers offer better exchange rates if you order online beforehand.

Combine orders

If you're travelling with others, consider placing one large currency order instead of buying individually. Many currency suppliers offer enhanced rates that improve as you order more.

Danish krone banknotes and coins

One Danish krone (kr.) can be subdivded into 100 øre. 'Krone' means 'crown' in Danish; and øre (pronounced 'err-uh') is derived from the Latin word 'aurum' which means 'gold'.

There are five denominations of Danish kroner banknotes in circulation: kr. 50, kr. 100, kr. 200, kr. 500 and kr. 1000; and six coin denominations: 50 øre, kr. 1, kr. 2, kr. 5, kr. 10 and kr. 20.

Like most nationalities, the Danes have colloquial nicknames for their banknotes. The 100-krone note is referred to as a 'hund' (dog) as a shortening of the word 'hundrede' (a hundred). The 500-krone note is nicknamed the 'plovmand' (ploughman) after a previous banknote design which featured a man with a plough, and the 1000-krone note is sometimes called a 'tudse' (toad) because it sounds similar to 'tusinde' which means 'a thousand' in Danish.
