Can euros be used in Poland?

Can euros be used in Poland? The short answer is no: euros cannot be used in Poland; you must use their official currency – the Polish zloty – instead.

Are euros accepted anywhere in Poland?

Some large retail outlets like hypermarkets may accept euros, but there is no guarantee. Even if a merchant does accept euros, they will likely be able to set their own EUR to PLN exchange rate which will not be in your favour.

If you have euros stored on a prepaid card or in a European bank account, you will be able to exchange these for Polish zloty at local ATMs, banks and Kantors (local foreign exchange providers), but again the exchange rate may not be very good and you’ll need to watch out for any additional fees or commission.

If you’re travelling to Poland from the UK, it is definitely best to take Polish zloty with you.

Euro adoption

Although Poland is part of the European Union, there is strong social and political opposition to adopting the euro within Poland because it is seen as potentially damaging to the Polish economy. For this reason, Poland have not adopted the euro and continue to use the zloty (pronounced ‘zwah-tee’) as their official currency.

One Polish zloty (PLN) can sub-divided into 100 groszy. Coins are minted in denominations of 1 PLN, 2 PLN, 5 PLN and 10, 20 and 50 groszy. Zloty banknotes are printed in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 PLN.

Where can I get the best Polish zloty exchange rate?

The good news for UK travellers is the zloty is a well-stocked, popular currency which means competition is high amongst travel money suppliers and you are likely to be able to find a good deal with a little bit of searching.
